Fort Edward Nighttime Snowshoe History Tour

Rogers Island Visitor Center in Fort Edward, NY, will host a nighttime snowshoe history tour on February 15, 2025. The tour will explore the Island’s history and its inhabitants, explain its importance in early American history, and describe the important archaeological excavations there conducted by the late Dr. David Starbuck.
It will also stop for a warm-up at one of the Island’s picnic tables with a view of the Hudson River where members of “Rogers Rangers” will answer questions about life on the island. Snacks and local beverages will be provided around a campfire. Once warmed and refreshed, the tour return to the Visitors Center under the light of the rising moon.
Tour participants will be traveling on unlighted, unmaintained paths, over uneven ground, and through fields. Appropriate winter clothing and footwear are required. Snowshoes/skis are not required but micro-spikes are recommended to prevent slipping, especially if there is only light snow cover. Bring your own flashlight or headlamp.
The tour will meet at the Visitors Center beginning at 7 pm to prepare and organize before heading out as a group for the approximately one-mile tour at 7:30 pm.
This event is weather dependent, but will only be postponed for extreme weather or dangerous conditions like heavy rain, extreme cold, or very icy conditions. If there is no snow participants will walk the trail instead.
Pre-registration is appreciated, but walk-ins are welcome. In the event of postponement, it will be posted on the website, social media, and those who have registered will be notified. The alternative date in case of cancellation will be March 15, 2025.
The cost is $10 per person. Children under 12 free. Register online here or by calling the Visitors Center at (518) 747-3693.
Note: The Rogers Island Visitors Center is closed during the winter months with minimal staffing. Allow up to a week for staff to respond to email or phone messages.
