Finn Wolfhard Previews Debut Album ‘Happy Birthday’ With New Single

“I started realizing a general theme in a lot of the other songs involving my identity, anxieties, nostalgia, childhood and loneliness,” the actor and musician said about Happy Birthday, out June 6
Finn Wolfhard is starting a new chapter. The actor and musician will release his debut album Happy Birthday on June 6 as his first collection of music as a soloist following stints in the bands Calpurnia and the Aubreys. “I started realizing a general theme in a lot of the other songs involving my identity, anxieties, nostalgia, childhood and loneliness,” he shared in a statement. “All of that was a part of a bigger puzzle. I knew I wanted to make a record, but I didn’t know with which songs.”
Wolfhard admits that he initially “ended up writing a lot of terrible stuff,” but he found his footing through those early musical endeavors to arrive at Happy Birthday. “Choose the Latter” is the first offering from the upcoming record. “If there was a choice/To be scraping back/On my own time/I’d be spending on ice/Been walking for miles,” he sings. “As she sings by the sea/I’m afraid it’ll stick permanently/If I don’t move and I can’t see/I choose the latter, choose the latter.”
During album release week, Wolfhard will embark on a six-date tour making stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver. Pre-sale begins March 11 at 10 a.m. local time ahead of a general sale scheduled for March 14 at 10 a.m.
Last year, Wolfhard wrapped filming on the final season of Stranger Things, the hit Netflix series he joined at 13. Now, at 22, his sights are set on the future. “Music for me has always been something that I can control,” he said. “And while I’m really grateful for acting and for a long time, it really provided me that peace, it’s just a different thing now that I’m an adult and that it’s a career. I still enjoy it a lot, but when I am by myself and get to play guitar and write a song, it’s a different kind of feeling I’m after.”
