She describes the show as being part of the subgenre of “Frontier Gothic”, which originated in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries and maps Gothic conventions on to stories of US expansion and frontier life. “The show also does body horror, in season two, where Caroline Ingalls gets her leg infected after a scratch, and takes a knife to it,” she adds. “All the tropes are there, all the conventions are there.”
