British Developer Christian Candy Dumps UES Townhouse

British developer Christian Candy is dispensing one of his luxury residential sweets.
An anonymous buyer purchased the townhouse at 8 East 62nd Street on the Upper East Side for $55 million, the Wall Street Journal reported. The undisclosed buyer was represented by Accent Holdings’ Michael Balanevsky.
The sale of the 15,000-square-foot limestone townhouse breaks down to about $3,667 per square foot. Adam Modlin of the Modlin Group held the listing.
Candy and his wife, Emily Crompton-Candy, bought the townhouse in 2022 from Somerset Partners’ Keith Rubenstein for $48 million. Rubenstein had been trying to sell the mansion for five years before the Candys came along, initially listing it in 2016 for $84.5 million.
The Candy couple renovated the townhouse after buying it. The six-bedroom home, less than a block away from Central Park, includes a grand entry gallery with a marble staircase, a reception room with a large chandelier and a full-floor primary suite with dual bathrooms, a dressing room and a wood-paneled library.
The sellers put the home on the market in April for $70 million, but failed to find any takers before taking the listing down. It popped back up on the market asking $57.5 million and went into contract six days after being relisted, a stunningly quick turnaround in today’s Manhattan townhouse market.
Christian and his brother Nick are known for developing London’s ultraluxury One Hyde Park condominiums. Christian and his wife own properties worldwide, previously residing in the Bahamas.
They also have a relatively new property in Manhattan.
Around the same time they first put the Upper East Side townhouse up for sale in April, the couple purchased a penthouse at JDS Development’s 111 West 57th Street for approximately $46.9 million. The unit initially listed in 2020 for $66 million.
Their Billionaires’ Row penthouse spans approximately 7,250 square feet, offering panoramic views from Central Park to the Statue of Liberty. The unit features a media room, 1,240-square-foot loggia and a great room with soaring 14-foot ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows.
Modlin also represented the couple in that deal.
