Cheesemaking in Jefferson County NY
For more than 50 years, Jefferson County was a leader in cheese manufacturing. The County provided millions of pounds annually to both the domestic and foreign markets.
In 1870 “The Windmill” cheese factory began in the Town of Hounsfield and in 1893 there were 149 cheese making locations in the Town, including one at Camps Mills.
That year, Jefferson County captured the first three prizes for June cheese at the Chicago World’s Fair.
Local historian Larry Corbett will present the history of cheesemaking in Jefferson County on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 from 6:30 pm until 7:30 pm at the Union Hotel, 401 West Main Street at the corner of Ray Street in Sackets Harbor, NY.
