Trial and error, incredible human drama, and engineering derring-do played key roles in solving engineering problems posed by the construction of the Erie Canal 200 years ago.
At noon on Thursday, August 28 at noon the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, NY, will host their Sloan Lecture by Laurie Lawlor, author of Many Voices: Building Erie, the Canal that Changed America. The talk will be presented in-person and online via Zoom.
Lawlor’s talk, “‘Go Ahead Anyway’: The Marvels of Engineering Hutzpah,” is an illustrated discussion focusing on the challenges of construction and the necessity of creating massive aqueducts, locks, and other mechanical marvels across extreme elevation challenges and daunting terrains ranging from whitewater rapids and sheer cliffs to quicksand and solid rock faces.
