- Hard Rock is partnering on an $850 million casino resort project in Puerto Rico
- The casino resort is slated to start construction this year and open in 2029
Hard Rock International is taking its act to Puerto Rico, with the gaming and hospitality conglomerate owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida announcing an $850 million investment in San Juan.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino San Juan is a collaboration between Hard Rock, Misla Hospitality Group, Stonecrest Investment Management, and The Interfin Companies. Misla and Stonecrest are based in Puerto Rico, while Interfin is Texas-based.
The partners plan to start construction later this year on the $850 million property. Offering views of both San Juan Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, the casino resort will include 415 hotel rooms and 58 suites. The destination will additionally offer 186 private residences.
“The space will be inspired by the island’s cultural and musical heritage, integrating beautiful work from community artists. The San Juan resort will join the company’s prestigious global hotels portfolio, bringing world-class entertainment and one-of-a-kind amenities to modern travelers who seek a reprieve from traditional, predictable hospitality experiences,” a release from Hard Rock read.
Construction is expected to create 2,500 jobs. Permanent positions are tagged at 1,250 team members.
While a precise location for the resort wasn’t specified, local speculation suggests the property will be constructed on the former grounds of the dilapidated Department of Finance building across from the San Juan Cruise Port Terminal 4. Hard Rock plans to open the San Juan complex in 2029.
Island’s First Integrated Casino
Puerto Rico has had casinos for decades, dating back to 1948 when the Games of Chance Act passed the Legislative Assembly. Enacted to promote tourism to the island when US casino gambling was limited to Las Vegas, Puerto Rico today has 16 licensed casinos, all of which are within hotels and resorts. Sports betting at casinos was authorized in 2020.
Most casinos in Puerto Rico, however, are small, boutique gaming venues with a couple of dozen slot machines and a limited offering of table games. Foxwoods El San Juan Casino at the Fairmount is among the larger casinos on the island with 300 slots, 14 tables, and a DraftKings Sportsbook. Hard Rock’s San Juan bills the project as the “first integrated casino in Puerto Rico,” offering a “complete travel-entertainment experience.”
In neighboring Dominican Republic, Hard Rock Punta Cana’s casino has more than 400 slots and nearly 40 table games.
Hard Rock Family-Friendly Resort
Hard Rock San Juan will offer something for all ages, with the project featuring a kids club, an arcade, and three pools. The property is to additionally offer a “curated teen hangout.”
Staying true to its tune, Hard Rock Puerto Rico will display music memorabilia, with an emphasis on the island’s musical heritage. Along with numerous event venues, Hard Rock San Juan is to house a recording studio that’s designed to “amplify the island’s music culture.”
“Music is at the heart of both Hard Rock and Puerto Rico, making this a perfect union,” said Jeff Hook, COO at Hard Rock International. “We’re honored to create a destination that celebrates Puerto Rico’s rich music and arts scene, and we look forward to welcoming visitors and locals alike to experience the island’s dynamic cultural landscape.”
