A third Hudson River Valley Greenway Trail usage report has been issued for the route that knits together 15 regional trails to create a continuous multi-use trail. Since 2021, 5.65 million visits have been counted at 37 sites along the trail.
The Hudson River Valley Greenway Trail consists of two main components: an overland long trail and a water trail for paddling and boating along both sides of the Hudson River from the Battery in Manhattan to the junction of Lake George and Lake Champlain valleys at Ticonderoga.
Two-thirds (67%) of the Greenway Trail’s 275 miles are non-motorized rail trails and canalway trails, 10-foot-wide paths with a paved or stone dust surface and gentle grades. The remaining one-third (33%) is designated on the shoulders of roadways, creating a continuous route. The on-road sections are appropriate for experienced bicyclists on long-distance rides.
The Greenway Trail System is also part of the Empire State Trail, the nation’s longest multi-use state trail. That trail spans 750-miles, from New York City through the Hudson and Champlain Valleys to Canada, and from Albany to Buffalo along the Erie Canal.
The Hudson River Valley Greenway is a unique state agency created in 1991 to assist with the development of a voluntary regional strategy for preserving scenic, natural, historic, cultural and recreational resources while encouraging compatible economic development and maintaining the tradition of home rule for land use decision making.
