Irish American Photographer Anna Frances Levins

The March 2025 episode of the Crossroads of Rockland History podcast celebrates both Women’s History Month and Saint Patrick’s Day in a discussion with Eve Kahn, the former Antiques Editor for the New York Times and Elizabeth Stack the Executive Director at the American Irish Historical Society who explore the life of Anna Frances Levins (1876-1941).
Levins was an Irish American artist and entrepreneur – a poet and photographer – who traveled widely to photograph remotest Ireland and created portraits of sitters ranging from Pope Pius X to Ireland’s first executive Eamon de Valera to martyred Irish revolutionaries like Kevin Barry.
The daughter of Irish immigrants who settled on the Lower East Side and then in the Bronx, she turned part of her Manhattan office into “a gallery of Irish heroes.”
