John Elway is living the good life — much to his surprise.
“My dad was a football coach, so I grew up in football,” Elway, 64, said during an appearance on “Fox and Friends” Wednesday. “I always thought that, when I did get away from it, I might miss it. And, actually, I’m kind of enjoying the retired life.”
The legendary Broncos’ quarterback said he’s filling in his post-playing, post-administrating days on the golf-course and with his grandkids — all 10 of them.
“I got a lot of kids to go see and spend some time with,” he said.
After graduating from Stanford, Elway played 16 years — the entirety of his career — with the Denver Broncos.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, he led the franchise to back-to-back championships in Super Bowl XXXII (1998) and Super Bowl XXXIII (1999).
In his second career, Elway served a variety of roles within the Broncos’ front office. As general manager and executive vice president of football operations, he oversaw four division titles, two AFC Championships, and the franchise’s victory in Super Bowl 50.
The Port Angeles native is still following his team closely, and he tells ESPN’s Adam Schefter that he sees a lot to like in upstart rookie quarterback Bo Nix.
“Bo has got all the tools, and I think in today’s game, even though you can get by without the movement, it sure is an added bonus to be able to move around and extend plays like [he has] been able to do,” Elway said on “The Adam Schefter Podcast.”
Elway continued: “I think the sky is the limit for him, and he’s just going to continue to get better and better the more comfortable that he gets.”
The Broncos are 6-5 entering Sunday’s road game against the Raiders, and Nix is coming off the best game of his young career, going 28-for-33 with 307 yards, four touchdowns and zero turnovers in a 38-6 win over the Falcons.
