Kaatersville Falls Injury Requires Rescue Mission

On Sunday, March 2 at about 2:10 pm, Greene County contacted Forest Ranger Dawson to help a subject with an arm injury at Kaaterskill Falls. The 25-year-old from Manhattan was with a friend hiking down to the middle pool area.
When hiking down the icy stairs towards the lower falls, and even while wearing microspikes, he slipped on the ice and landed on his shoulder.
Kaaterskill Falls one of the highest waterfalls in New York, and one of the Eastern United States’ tallest waterfalls. Nine people died at Kaaterskill Falls between 1988 and 2021.
The waterfalls, now part of the Kaaterskill Wild Forest, are one of America’s oldest tourist attractions, being depicted or described by many books, essays, poems and paintings of the early 19th century. Beginning with Thomas Cole‘s first visit during 1825, they became a subject for painters of the Hudson River School.
At 3:30 pm, Rangers Dawson and Gullen reached the subject. Rangers provided care and assisted the subject to Route 23A where his friend picked him up.
