The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced an immediate, temporary closure of the fishing pier located at the Crown Point Campground and Day Use Area in Crown Point, Essex County, due to the discovery of structural damage to the pier roof.
“Out of an abundance of caution to ensure public safety, fishing and walking on the pier will not be allowed while DEC works with a structural engineer to evaluate the infrastructure and any next steps,” DEC’s announcement said. “This closure may continue for the duration of the 2026 season.”
The remaining areas of the Crown Point Campground and Day Use Area remain open for public use while the pier is closed.
Nearby alternative locations for outdoor recreation include Ausable Point Campground and Day Use Area, Ausable Marsh Wildlife Management Area, and many other fishing spots along Lake Champlain.
Putnam Pond Campground, about 10 miles south in Ticonderoga, offers a more secluded lake experience with fishing, swimming, and paddling.
Crown Point Campground and Day Use Area is adjacent to Crown Point Historic Site, which includes the remnants of Fort Crown Point and Fort St. Frederic. Both are a National Historic Landmark.
The pier on Lake Champlain is overlooked by the Champlain Memorial Lighthouse, a memorial to the exploration of the lake by Samuel de Champlain, dedicated in 1912. The light keeper’s house was long-ago demolished.
The campground and day use are opens on May 15 and closes on October 12. The fee is $18 per night, with an out of state resident surcharge of $5 per night. Reservations for camping and can be made via ReserveAmerica. Same-day reservations are allowed until 5 pm if space is available.
