Mabel’s 1908 Diary: Art, Trig, and Sweets

In 1908,  while attending Syracuse University, Alice Mabel Allen (1886-1976) kept a diary which is being published each week.

Monday, February 10

Studied trig most of the morning. Ethel told Mrs. Campbell about the girls’ leaving. Picture of Dora [her older sister] and the youngsters came this afternoon. Appointed scribe in Latin. Walked downstreet with Edith. Went into Schrafft’s. Bought a buckle. Went over to corner with Lu to-night and then returned a book to Emily Palmer. Fuzzie up and studied math.

Tuesday, February 11

After Eng. went over to library to look up words for elocution. Came back and found letter from father. Working on King Robert of Sicily for Elocution. After dinner studied math. Letter from mother. Went over to see Katherine Wright. She looked very thin. Came back and studied until five. Went walking with Lu to Genesee St. bakery after things for Ethel who is ill. After supper went in Ethel’s rooms and washed dishes and made bed. To-night studied Latin Prose. Most of girls have gone out. Senior week. Arose early this A.M. and studied trig.

Letter from Edna [her other sister]. Edith came over after coat to wear to Sigma Chi party. Walked downstreet with Lu. Ordered flower pot of daffodils to be sent Katherine Wright on Valentine’s day. Bought collar for mother. Went to library for application card. Bought chocolate cup cakes at Sterling’s which we just ate in Harriet’s room. Harriet fell in library this morning. 

Thursday, February 13

Math has been changed from Thursday to Monday morning. Rained and blew this morning. Journal came. Studied this P.M. Went downstreet for Jean to get hyacinth for Ethel. Saw Mr. Boomer of Adams on the train. After supper Jean gave me some Hershey’s chocolate for a valentine. Wrote character sketch. Lillian gone out. Harriet in on the bed reading.

Friday, February 14

Valentine’s Day. It is now Monday and I cannot remember anything special. I think I saw Miss Minch for first time since her return. She is better but not strong. She will not take up math this semester. 

Saturday, February 15

Did trig with Helen Beattie after English. After dinner walked down to corner grocery after starch, bluing and naptha soap with Lu. Washed but found it too rainy to hang out clothes. Lu and I went downstreet. Bought material for jumper [? see insert] and for green check summer dress. Both were bargains. Lu took me into Schrafft’s. Bought sandwiches. Saw ‘Old Darby’ [a painting] by Rosa Bonheur and ‘The Toiler’ by Herbert du Moreau at Hunter & Tuppen’s. Old Darby valued at $45,000. Read to-night. Fuzzie made candy.

Sunday, February 16

Slept with Fuzzie in Cassie’s room last night. Went with Harriet and Lu to St. Paul’s. Read Return of the Native in afternoon until time for vespers. I went with Lu down to St Paul’s. Drank coffee for lunch which kept me awake. Read and finished Return of the Native. Isabel up in Harriet’s room and brot fudge.
