Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine is formally jumping into the city Comptroller race, promising to use the watchdog’s authority to improve affordability for New Yorkers.
Levine announced Thursday he will run in the crowded 2025 Comptroller’s race to oversee the independent agency tasked with keeping a watchful eye on City Hall spending.
“New York families are struggling. Prices are skyrocketing, and it feels like everything is getting harder. We need a government that’s on our side, that fights for us, and that understands our daily struggles,” Levine said.
The Democrat has already received endorsements from Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, Assembly Member Maritza Davila, and Brooklyn District Leaders Jenna Bimbi and Joey Saban.
“As Comptroller, I’ll be a watchdog for taxpayers, making sure every dollar is spent wisely, and fighting to lower the cost of living for everyone. I’ll work to build housing that is affordable, to make our streets safer, our schools better, and our neighborhoods more vibrant,” Levine said.
Other possible Comptroller candidates are Queens Assemblymember Jenifer Rajkumar and Brooklyn Councilman Justin Brannan.
Rajkumar was often seen at press conferences supporting Mayor Eric Adams, but the assemblywoman hasn’t been a visible figure at the mayor’s side in recent appearances. She announced her candidacy for the city-wide seat in August.
Brannan, the chair of the Council’s finance committee is term-limited. He filed fundraising paperwork for a possible comptroller run over the summer, but has yet to officially announce his bid for the already hotly contested seat.
New York City’s current Comptroller Brad Lander is leaving the coveted financial watchdog seat to run for mayor against Adams.
