A new documentary film unveils a rare and haunting glimpse into “Old Main,” one of America’s oldest asylums, located in Utica, NY. Established in 1843, this facility was the first in New York State devoted to the care of the mentally ill during a time when understanding mental health was still in its infancy.
The imposing structure still stands as a silent witness to the countless inhabitants who lived there until its doors closed for good in 1978.
Since then, much of the building has remained shrouded in mystery and largely inaccessible to the public. Producer and director Bill Stephens secured special permission from the New York State Office of Mental Health to venture into the untouched, un-renovated sections of the building.
These hidden areas, typically off-limits to visitors, a profound narrative of the history of the evolving understanding of mental health care.
Utica Screening Planned
A screening of Hidden History Unlocked will take place at the Oneida County History Center in Utica on Saturday, January 24, at 2 pm.
Two special guests will join the event. Dr. Amiriah Brigham, portrayed by actor Mark Hanna, will discuss his invention of the Utica Crib and local author Dennis Webster, who appears in the movie, will sign copies of his books, including The New York State Lunatic Asylum at Utica: A History of Old Main.
