Kick off baseball season with a retro subway ride on opening day. The New York Transit Museum will run vintage trains for the Yankees’ and Mets’ home opener games on March 27 and April 4, respectively. The old-school trains depart from Grand Central-42nd Street to 161st Street-Yankee Stadium and from 34th Street-Hudson Yards to Mets-Willets Point. The event is free with subway fare.

The museum will roll out its iconic 1917 IRT Lo-V train, Train of Many Colors, and redbirds to take fans to the stadiums.
The Lo-V subway fleet began service in 1917 and operated until 1969. Over 1,200 of these cars ran in the system and were among the last owned by the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) before the city purchased the subway system in 1940, as 6sqft previously reported.
The Train of Many Colors, one of the museum’s nostalgia trains, includes a collection of cars manufactured in the 1960s, each representing different eras of the subway system’s history, from the “Tartar Red” and “Gunn Red” redbirds to the robin’s egg blue and cream “Bluebird” paint schemes.
Riders will feel like they traveled back in time, with the train’s rattan seats, handrails, vintage interior, ceiling fans, and retro advertisements.

At 12 p.m., the Yankees’ Home Opener Ride will run non-stop from the uptown 4 train platform at 42nd Street-Grand Central to 161st Street-Yankee Stadium. The first train to depart will be an Lo-V train, followed immediately by a combination of IRT SMEE cars from the Train of Many Colors. The ride takes about 25 minutes.
The Bronx Bombers will take on the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday, March 27; first pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
The Mets’ Home Opener Ride will depart at noon from 34th Street-Hudson Yards on the 7 line, making stops at Times Square-42nd Street, 5th Avenue, Grand Central-42nd Street, Vernon Boulevard-Jackson Avenue, Hunters Point Avenue, Court Square, Queensboro Plaza, 61st Street-Woodside, Junction Boulevard, and Mets-Willets Point. The trip takes roughly 35 minutes.
The Mets play the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday, April 4; first pitch is 3:10 p.m.
“The crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd, and the hum of a vintage subway car—what better way to welcome back baseball season than with a Nostalgia Ride to Opening Day? We’re thrilled to be part of the team that gets to bring this beloved tradition back to Queens,” New York Transit Museum Director Concetta Bencivenga said.
