For the second year in a row, Union Square will host a colorful display of 170,000 tulips, with visitors invited to pick a bouquet for free. As a perfect way to welcome spring to the city–and your home–the event takes place on March 30 in the downtown Manhattan park, with advance registration required.
Tulip Day is courtesy of a collaboration between international flower and tree agriculture organization Royal Anthos, NYC Parks, the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in New York and Union Square Partnership.
The U.S. is the largest international tulip buyer, importing over a billion tulip bulbs each year (though the flowers are grown in America). Julie Stein, Executive Director, Union Square Partnership, called last year’s Tulip Day “a delight to behold.”
“Tulip Day has become a cherished spring event in New York City,” Mark-Jan Terwindt, CEO of Royal Anthos, said. “We are delighted to share the beauty of tulips with thousands of visitors, bringing a touch of European floral heritage to the heart of Manhattan for the second year in a row.”
“In addition to enhancing the landscape with their vibrant colors, tulips also signify that spring will soon be upon us,” NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue said.
“We’re delighted to share this floral experience with the Consul General, Union Square Partnership, and all New Yorkers.”
Tulip Day happens on March 30, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with advance registration required. Registration opens on March 17; the event, like the flowers, is free.
