Some small shifts in the app download rankings for January, with ChatGPT taking the crown as the most downloaded app on iOS, and TikTok rising to the top of the combined app downloads chart.

As you can see in the latest rankings from app analytics provider AppFigures, TikTok jumped to the top of the list last month, beating out Instagram, which had held onto the top spot for more than a year.
But that doesn’t make any sense, right? TikTok downloads have been halted in the U.S. due to the Biden-approved sell-off bill, so how the heck did it get to the top of the app charts in January of all months?
According to AppFigures, Indonesia is leading the way on new TikTok users:
“While the U.S. is a major revenue source for TikTok it isn’t for downloads. The U.S. ranked 5th in terms of new downloads in December, adding 5% to TikTok’s total. Indonesia is TikTok’s biggest source of new downloads, adding 10% to its total in December.”
TikTok’s been steadily gaining traction in Southeast Asian markets, which also bodes well for its in-app shopping push, as Indonesian users are also more open to buying in-stream.
Indeed, TikTok solidified its shopping push in the region last year by acquiring local eCommerce platform Tokopedia, in order to meet Indonesian Government regulations on contributing to local business. And now, with more users signing up to the app, Indonesia looks set to become an even more critical market for the app, which will be especially true if the U.S. TikTok sell-off bill is eventually upheld.
In terms of other download notes, the charts are largely the same, though AppFigures notes that the top ten most downloaded apps saw more app downloads, overall, in January vs December.
Except one:
“Threads is the only app in the list that saw fewer downloads in January vs December. We compared it against Bluesky and X to see if it’s a market trend or not and it isn’t, Threads is the only one that declined while the other two grew, though Threads continues to get more downloads in absolute terms.”
That’s not a great indicator for Meta’s challenger app, though Meta did report late last month that Threads is up to 320 million monthly active users, and is gaining growth momentum over time.
Fewer downloads doesn’t necessarily counter this, as active, returning users and direct downloads are different. But still, it could be a point to note if that trend holds in February.
ChatGPT’s download numbers have remained steady, though it may also have seen a boost in January following the U.S. government’s “Stargate” announcement.
Outside of that, Meta continues to dominate, with Snapchat holding onto its spot in the top 10.
