Known for its rolling hardwood forests, diverse wildlife, and scenic overlooks, Sugar Hill State Forest offers an inviting gateway to the natural landscapes of the Finger Lakes region.
Located just outside Watkins Glen, this state forest stands out in the area for its unique blend of hidden ponds and waterfalls, mountainous hills, and a noteworthy fire tower that rewards visitors with 15 miles of panoramic views.
A site of historical significance, the Sugar Hill Fire Tower was built in 1941 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, who helped develop the area, and was consistently staffed until the 1980s.
Today, the 9,213 acres that make up Sugar Hill State Forest are in the towns of Orange, Tyrone, Reading, and Dix in Schuyler County.
The multiple-use Six Nations Trail System, the Finger Lakes Trail, and the Sugar Hill Recreation Area, including the Sugar Hill Fire Tower, provide opportunities for visitors to hike, bike, ride horseback, cross-country ski, snowshoe, and even operate snowmobiles in the winter months.
On the trails or while taking in the breathtaking views atop the fire tower, visitors may spot a variety of wildlife species, from black bears to Black-throated Blue Warblers and brook trout to Wild Turkey.
In the forested hills, view white-tailed deer, fisher, Eastern Towhee, Blue-winged Warbler, and Ruffed Grouse. In the wetlands, glimpse beaver and mink.
No matter the time of year, Sugar Hill State Forest is a great outdoor destination for wildlife watching with views of the Finger Lakes region.
