Why No. 22 was vital to Mets’ Juan Soto signing
No. 22 is so important to Juan Soto, he had it included in his record-setting, 15-year, $765 million contract that he will continue to wear it with the Mets.
He also has a gold chain with No. 22 on it, which he wore to his introductory press conference Thursday at Citi Field.
“Twenty-two is the first number I had when I made it to the big leagues,” the superstar outfielder said. “It was important to me. When the Nationals gave me that number, I was really happy, really excited. That was the first number I’ve ever wore and I am more than happy to keep embracing that number.”
No. 22 has a prominent history in Mets lore.
Their only two World Series titles featured players Ray Knight and Donn Clendenon wearing that number and winning the series MVP.
“That means a lot,” Soto said. “That [makes] me really happy.”
