Mnuchin Family’s Upper East Side Townhouse Lists for $35M

An Upper East Side townhouse is hitting the market after decades in the Mnuchin family.
The family of the former Treasury Secretary is asking $35 million for the property at 45 East 78th Street, the Wall Street Journal reported. Robert Mnuchin, the late art dealer, and his second wife, Adriana, lived in the home after purchasing it for an unknown price in 1983 (though not before a year-and-a-half renovation).
Constructed around World War I, the home is 33 feet wide and spans 17,600 square feet across its six floors. The listing breaks down to $1,989 per square foot.
The bottom two floors were home to Robert’s art gallery after he launched C&M Arts in 1992 before rebranding through a partnership as L&M Arts. The space reached its ultimate iteration as the Mnuchin Gallery in 2013.
The family stopped living there decades earlier because of the business, according to Robert’s daughter Valerie Mnuchin, and they planned to sell the property after Robert’s death.
Before the Mnuchins, the property served as a college dormitory and a psychiatrist’s office.
Adam Modlin of the Modlin Group has the listing.
Steven served as Treasury Secretary during President Donald Trump’s first administration. The founder of Liberty Strategic Capital declined to comment to the outlet on the listing.
His stepsister, Lisa Hedley, sold her waterfront Palm Beach house for $23.8 million last year. She purchased the property in 2012 for $2.9 million and built a 3,400-square-foot home there in 2014.
The Upper East Side’s trophy townhouse market has kept busy in recent months.
Billionaire Ron Perelman sold his home at 36 East 63rd Street for $46.75 million in February, nearly six years after he first listed it with an asking price of $65 million. The same month, British developer Christian Candy sold his renovated townhouse at 8 East 62nd Street for $55 million, or $3,667 per square foot.
