On February 8, 2025, at about 11:00 a.m., New York State Police in Chestertown responded to the Gore Mountain Ski Resort in North Creek, Warren County, NY for the report of an injured skier.
A severely injured skier had been discovered in the area of the Sagamore Trail. Witnesses at the scene told New York Almanack he lost control and went off the trail into the trees.
Bystanders and ski patrol staff attempted life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, Kevin Colwell, 53 and the founder of well-known upstate firm Colwell Law Group, was declared deceased at the scene. He was originally from from Hudson, NY, but lived with his family in Guilderland, NY.
The 1.3-mile (1,400 vertical feet) Sagamore Trail is rated for advanced skiers, but is considered one of the easier black diamond trails at Gore. The top of the trail is at about 3,700 feet. Black diamond trails typically have a 40–60% grade.
The trail is located beneath and alongside the High Speed Burnt Ridge Quad, one of the ski lifts at the state-owned ski resort in the Adirondacks.
“It’s a super-friendly black diamond roller coaster that waits until the end to really test your stamina,” according to Gore Mountain website. “The Burnt Ridge area is key to the Interconnect between the North Creek Ski Bowl and Gore’s Base Area.”
Police said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
