This year marks 25 years since the Bronx River Alliance was started as a non-profit in 2001 by the Bronx River Working Group.
With the help of volunteers, community leaders, elected officials, donors, and partners, the Bronx River has been increasingly transformed from a place once treated as a dumping ground into an educational, ecological, and recreational resource for Bronx communities.
Over the past 25 years, the Bronx River Alliance has helped protect about 25 acres along the river, and improved another 25 more.
They have also transformed an abandoned street into a waterfront park in Hunts Point, and with Youth Ministries for Peace & Justice (YMPJ), converted an abandoned concrete plant into a new waterfront park.
They also opened a fish ladder at the 182nd Street Dam in River Park and completed the first two phases of a planned rejuvenation of Starlight Park, once the site of an amusement park.
Current recreational facilities in Starlight Park currently houses sports field and courts, checkers tables, and a seasonal canoe launch.
During the summer, the Alliance runs regular paddling opportunities. Future plans call for a waterfront greenway, as well as the opening of the parkland on the eastern bank of the Bronx River.
None of these efforts would have been possible without a longtime partnership with NYC Parks and the dedication of many champions of the river.
Throughout this anniversary year, they’ll be highlighting their past achievements and sharing their vision for the future.
