Shortly after the lift started running 67 people were trapped in about 20 gondola cars. Olympic Regional Development Authority spokeswoman Darcy Norfolk Rowe said the issue was “a mechanical alignment matter.”

The Northwoods Gondola was installed from the base of the mountain to the summit in 1999, replacing the Old Red Gondola, which had been installed in 1967.  Gore Mountain is one of three major ski areas in New York State, all owned by the state. It’s located in Johnsburg, Warren County, NY, in the Southern Adirondacks.

Technical climbers, including NYS Forest Rangers effected the rescues of each car. Some were trapped for about five hours in freezing temperatures.

No one was reported injured and the Northwoods Gondola is operating normally again.
