A new digital project is documenting the forgotten stories of people of color in Northern New York. Jacqueline Madison, President of the North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association has created a website to share stories she has uncovered of working-class people of color in the Adirondack and Lake Champlain regions.
The new website, jaqcalinfo.com, chronicles the history of individuals who lived, loved, and thrived in the North Country.
These vignettes use historical documents to weave together stories that illuminate the realities of life for people such as Black Americans, Chinese migrants, and other people of color in Northern New York from the 18th-century to today.
“These stories may be of interest to individuals seeking information on their ancestors and suspect or know that they lived in this region of New York,” the website says.
“In addition to family history, there may be researchers wanting to learn more about people of color living in this area. While there are some familiar names like the Tankards, many of these individuals were buried in the census, newspapers, and other sources.”
The North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association oversees the North Star Underground Railroad Museum.
