Healing and Health—One Love Method Grounding Practices

The One Love Method is a teaching and learning method for racial justice theatre. Dr. Ayshia will walk participants through a healing session as an example of how the method can be used in the theatre classroom, rehearsal room and beyond. The presentation offers music, meditation, ancestral connection, and an Ubuntu healing circle grounded in the practices of West Africa and the diaspora.
The presentation explains the importance of healing and health in racial justice theatre. One Love is founded upon West African indigenous philosophy and uses human rights to help theatre and performance teachers promote justice, embody non-western practices, and set a confirming environment for BIPOC students. One Love pedagogy focuses on helping all students, specifically Black students and other students of color feel loved, visible and safe. Love is action—teachers can offer love through the way we teach, through the way we treat ourselves and our students. Grounding practices are explored as an example of how to use racial justice theatre to heal others, and to help students meet their foundational wellness needs.
This presentation is an introduction to the forthcoming Routledge textbook (October 2026), Teaching Racial Justice Theatre & Performance: The One Love Method.
