St. Lawrence University’s Adirondack Semester

St Lawrence University Adirondack Semester Yurt VillageSt Lawrence University Adirondack Semester Yurt VillageA new episode of the ADK Talks podcast explores St. Lawrence University’s Adirondack Semester — an immersive, place-based academic program set in the Adirondack Park.

Each fall, a small group of students lives off-grid in a yurt village near Massawepie Lake, without phones or Wi-Fi, studying natural history, land use, and Adirondack communities through direct experience.

The program blends environmental studies, outdoor skills, and community living, offering a distinctive model of experiential education rooted in the Adirondacks.

In conversation with Jacob McCoola, Director of Outdoor Leadership and the Adirondack Semester, and Nicole Panek, Assistant Director and former student, this episode examines how the Adirondacks function not just as a destination, but as a classroom — and what that means for the future of education in the region.
