Mabel’s 1908 Diary: The Wedding Cake Ring

CastleCastleAlice Mabel Allen (1886-1976) grew up in the village of Adams in Jefferson County. In 1908, while attending Syracuse University, Mabel, as she was known, kept a diary which New York Almanack is publishing each week.

Monday, May 18

Excused from math. Letter from Rosina asking Edith and me to dinner. Studied with Helen at Castle grounds. Lost ‘Winter’s Tale’ which I have hunted for all over. Went to ballgame — Syracuse vs. Hamilton — with Katherine Arnold. A slow game, so we did not stay to the finish. Went to sleep for a few minutes and then went over to Myrtle Heath’s. Staid to dinner with her. Went down with Lu to see Miss Sanford about Boys’ Club.

Tuesday, May 19

Had conference with Dr. Eaton at 3. He said my work was interesting which was pretty much for me. Harriet and I went to a Tri Delta reception given by Mrs. Clark on Euclid Ave. We both patted ourselves on the back for doing the social stunt without a blunder. Mrs. C. has locked the door to the front room, thinking, I suppose, to lock in our clothes. Went down to library to write theme to-night on the Boys’ Club.

Wednesday, May 20

Helen and I tried to cram Trig into our brains but they absolutely refused, so we went for a walk the last period in Castle grounds. Also went down to get my picture of Dora and the children. Went over to library to get the Winter’s Tale and when I came back found a Phi Psi banner from Rollin and handkerchief I left. After supper walked out with Lu on Long Walk. College band and sing on the hill. Went to bed early.

Thursday, May 21

Slept late this morning. The meals are getting so bad that I have a half starved feeling most of the time. Edith came over for me to go walking this noon and I told her about the Prom. Journal [her father’s weekly] did not come until this P.M. At 4 went with Lu to Michigan ballgame — Michigan winning 2 to 0. After supper a hurdy-gurdy [player] came & played before the house a long time. Lillian and most of the girls have gone out to-night. Harriet & Lu bought some peanuts which Grace and I helped them eat.

Friday, May 22

Last class in Trig. I wonder if for good and all. Mr. Pratt gave us a splendid talk. Helen came down. No mail. Roman wedding cake was passed around in Latin and mine had the wedding ring in it. Took Harriet down — or rather, Lu — to Walker’s for some ice-cream. Studied elocution. After supper we fooled outdoors; Fuzzie & I danced and Lu and I walked with Lillian. Fuzzie, Lillian & I wrote names for the wedding cake to-night.

Saturday, May 23

Slept on Roman wedding cake. After breakfast went for a short walk with Will Jones. Tried the final in elocution. Lu and Mrs. Campbell had a rather warm discussion about Jean. Lu and I walked before dinner. Early Harriet and I went over to the library and I read Bradley on Hamlet until after 4. Played tennis with Ethel Fennel at 5. Went over to the library again after supper with Lu and Harriet. After walked with Lu. Was pretty much out of sorts because the girls had borrowed my gray suit and I wanted it. Cassie slept with me as Grace’s mother was here.

Sunday, May 24

Drew out Hubert Jenkin’s name. After breakfast we talked out in front & then Lu, Harriet, Fuzzie, Lillian and I went in the woods by the cemetery. I tried to learn poetry. Edith came at 1:15 for me to go over to Rosina’s to dinner. We had such a good time and the time slipped away so fast that I did not have time to meet the girls for Vespers. Letters from Rollin and Dora to-day. Wrote home and now am going to bed.
