Sheep Returning to The Dell at Schenectady’s Vale Cemetery

After a hiatus in 2025, a flock of sheep are returning to Vale Cemetery today only, June 11th (sorry for the late notice).
Since the establishment of The Dell, Vale’s natural burial section, the Cemetery has hosted sheep and goats who help “mow” this unique area.
Vale Cemetery was founded in 1857 with The Dell opening in 2014. Burials in The Dell do not make use of embalming and only biodegradable materials such as wicker coffins, pine caskets without metal hardware, or shrouds made from natural fibers are allowed.
“The Vale,” as it was called, was part of the Rural Cemetery Movement, which began in 1831 at Mt. Auburn Cemetery near Boston. At that time, inner-city burying grounds filling up as populations expanded and rampant epidemics swept through cities, increasing the death rates and creating a need for more burial sites.
The sheep and goats have been a popular draw for visitors and the public is invited to come see them. This year, they will be provided by Dr. Judy Saint Leger of Dutch Barn Farms in Fort Plain. There will also be some lambs on site for children to pet.
Other events coming to Vale include “The 1857 Tour” on June 18th, a rural cemetery ramble through the historic paths of The Vale; and a Juneteenth Celebration on June 19th.
Vale Cemetery is located at 907 State Street, in Schenectady, NY. Visit their website for more information.
