Erie Canal Lock 1 in Albany Walking Tour and Talk

Lock 1 on the Erie Canal was located in Albany, where the canal once met the Hudson River. For more than 100 years it raised and lowered boats between the higher canal level and the Hudson River. While the original lock is currently partially buried, there are efforts to explore its potential for restoration and revitalization.
On June 25, 2025, between 5:30 and 7:30 pm, the Historic Albany Foundation will host archaeologist Denis Foley, historian Andrew Wolfe, and historic painter Len Tantillo as they lead a walking tour and talk about the once-visible, now-covered lock. The guides will present fascinating stories and insights about the canal’s role in shaping the region.
The tour will culminate at Common Roots for further discussions over refreshments.
