Dr. Melissane Schrems will present a talk at Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site exploring the nation’s founding, and the historical and the ongoing relationship of Indigenous people in the American landscape. This program focuses on the relationship between Native Americans, Black Americans, and colonists of New York State in the time before and after the American Revolution.
Dr. Schrems focuses attention on the human connection between the natural and built environments and how the American Revolution connects to Indigenous histories, our use of natural resources, political development, and national expansion.
Dr. Schrems received her doctorate in American History from Boston University. She is both an academic and public historian who has taught at St. Lawrence University for 22 years. Additionally, she has a role with the University’s Land Acknowledgement Drafting Group, and is a member of Humanities New York‘s “Land, Liberty, and Loss: Echoes of the American Revolution Project.”
Her program concludes the historic site’s spring program series that focuses on life in the North Country, the natural and man-made environment encompassing social, political, and military stories from the past to the present.
This program will take place on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 6:30 pm at Union Hotel, 401 West Main Street, in Sackets Harbor, NY.
