Mabel Allen’s 1908 Diary: Goodbye to Friends

Alice Mabel Allen (1886-1976) grew up in the village of Adams in Jefferson County. In 1908, while attending Syracuse University, Mabel, as she was known, kept a diary which New York Almanack is publishing each week. This week she takes her final exams before returning to Adams for the summer.
Monday, June 1
This morning it was so cool that I wore my sweater in the house. Studied Latin. Edith phoned over at noon and wanted me to go walking with her.
After dinner I went down to study Trig with Helen B. When the Muse refused to work she treated me to ice cream and I bought peanuts and pop corn. Walked down to shoe shop with Lu and Harriet. Studying Trig to-night. Said good-bye to Leta Osgoodby.
Tuesday, June 2
Latin this morning which was pretty decent. I was tried afterwards and simply could not study for Trig which came this afternoon. Have not the slightest idea whether or not I passed. At 5 went down with Harriet to buy Lu’s graduating present. Bought her a leather bound copy of Kipling’s Day’s Work. Read Winter’s Tale to-night.
Wednesday, June 3
Studied all day over Shakspere. Mary and Clara went this afternoon. Had letter from Shel Hungerford saying he called when I was here. At four Harriet took Lu and me down to Schrafft’s for some ice. Rode home. Took my last meal at the Campbell to-day. Saw Cassie’s mother to train. Studied.

Thursday, June 4
Got up at 5 to study for English. Lillian did, also. Tried English until 12 when I came home, read the Journal [her father’s weekly newspaper] and ate my dinner of an orange and a cookie.
Harriet left this morning and Lillian this afternoon. Went with Lu on Junior picnic out to Edward’s Falls. Helped with the supper. The whole crowd went over to see dress parade at Manlius. Sang the alma mater on the hill. Went to Jamesville on way back.
Friday, June 5
Slept with Lu in her room. Got up early and went in Fuzzie’s room. She and Cassie went this morning. Mrs. Campbell forgot to order my trunk, so Will Jones and Mr. Abbott brot it up. Lu helped me pack. Took box down to Mrs. Libby’s.
Lu went down to station with me and then I bot Sir Galahad for Edith and the Rubaiyat for Rollin. Lu and I had lunch at the Sterling–I took my first and last meals of the college year there. Father and mother were down to station to meet me.
Saturday, June 6
1st ice cold water bath of the season! Dusted the parlor and the dining room. Went down with Cousin Jo and selected Irma’s wedding present. Unpacked my trunk and then went to sleep. Drove with Mrs. Cooper, mother and Louise until six. Saw Jessie and Mary. To-night Louise went with us to the Extravaganza which was rather good. Dora [her sister] was to have started to-day.
Sunday, June 7
Another warm day! Attended service four times. Church, Sunday school, Christian Endeavor and church. Nettie Brown sat with father and me and I asked her home for lunch. Afterwards we walked. Wrote to Irma, Della and Jessie Torrey this afternoon and pasted stuff in my scrap book. Talked with mother until rather late.
