New York State has approximately almost 40 short line, regional, and terminal railroads, in addition to four major Class I railroads. These smaller railroads currently operate over 2,000 miles of track combined.
Often overlooked in favor of the major railroad lines, short lines have historically played a vital role in connecting communities, fueling commerce, and shaping New York State’s economy.
New York State Archives Partnership Trust will host a virtual talk about the history of New York’s short lines including some of the stories of the trains, the towns they served, and the people who kept them running.
Presenter Richard Comstock is a Steward Chair for the New York State Archives Partnership Trust with an interest in short line railroads. Thomas J. Ruller recently retired from his position as New York State Archivist.
