One of the last and finest examples of alvar grasslands in the world, Chaumont Barrens Preserve is a one-of-a-kind destination in New York State.
Featuring a unique landscape with flat, rocky terrain of grasslands, limestone woodlands, cedar forests, pavement barrens, and globally rare plant communities, Chaumont Barrens is home to a mosaic of natural and remarkable wonders.
Alvar Barrens
Alvar barrens are prairie-like landscapes with thin, shallow soil over a foundation of limestone bedrock. The bedrock found throughout Chaumont Barrens is approximately 450 million years old; at that time Chaumont was at the bottom of a shallow tropical sea near the equator.
Today, if you look closely, you can still find remains of primitive marine animals, such as cephalopods, in the fossilized bedrock.
Located in Jefferson County, Chaumont Barrens offers a 1.7-mile self-guided hiking trail where visitors can explore the mosaic of rare habitats, unique geology, and uncommon plants.
Starting in late-May through mid-June, visitors can enjoy a diverse array of native wildflowers in bloom, including prairie smoke, which is seen nowhere else in the northeast.
Other plants that call this landscape home include blue phlox, bloodroot, balsam ragwort, yellow lady’s slipper, ram’s head, early buttercup, reindeer lichen, white cedar, white spruce, and white pine.
As for wildlife, Chaumont Barrens is an excellent birding location to view Prairie Warbler, Clay-colored Sparrow, Scarlet Tanager, Golden-winged Warbler, Bobolink, Upland Sandpiper, Eastern Towhee, Whip-poor-will, Common Yellowthroat, Black-and-white Warbler, and Cedar Waxwing.
Visitors can also see porcupines, coyotes, white-tailed deer, and many other wildlife species while on the trail. The trail at Chaumont Barrens Preserve is open dawn to dusk from early spring to early fall.
