Samsung unveils Galaxy A16 (4G), also with 6 years of support

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A16 5G a couple of weeks ago, but there was no mention of a 4G version – well, that’s now official too, as Samsung France posted a press release that calls the Galaxy A16 and Galaxy A16 5G “smartphones that stand the test of time”. This is because both models will be supported for 6 years – this includes OS updates as well as security patches.

The Samsung Galaxy A16 (4G) is nearly identical to its 5G sibling – it has a 6.7” FHD+ OLED display running at 90Hz, a 5,000mAh battery with 25W charging, a 50+5+2MP rear and 13MP front cameras, all packed into a slimmer 7.9mm body now with an IP54 dust and water resistance rating (the two A15 phones measure 8.4mm thick and don’t have an IP rating). The IP rating is a first in this category – A1x and even A2x didn’t have an official rating, you had to go up to A3x for that.

However, Samsung being Samsung, it didn’t say what chipset is used for the A16 4G. Considering that the A15 4G had a Helio G99, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the Helio G100 in the new model – it’s a minor upgrade over the G99, but having +1 in the model number still counts as an upgrade. Jokes aside, the G100 adds support for 200MP cameras, which isn’t relevant in this case.

The Galaxy A16 4G has the same 4GB of RAM and 128GB storage with a microSD slot for cards up to 1TB. There’s no mention of a 3.5mm headphone jack, so we don’t think that is coming back.

The press release skips over something else – the price. Judging by the A15 and A15 5G, a discount of around €50 is to be expected for the 4G model.

What it does say is that the Samsung Galaxy A16 4G will be available in November (note: this is for France, but it should be a pan-European launch). The phone will come in Gray, Green and Blue.
